Deep root watering

Slowly and deeply water trees after planting and as needed. The soil underneath mulch should always feel slightly damp. Water trees once every two weeks, from spring to fall, with a hose trickling for about 30 minutes at the base of the tree.

Trees need water to survive

When trees are planted the root system is reduced and additional care is required until their fine network of roots are reestablished. Watering should be done in the morning before the heat of the day. Outdoor watering in the afternoon and evening places tremendous demands on the City's water distribution system and much of the water will evaporate.

Mature trees (a tree planted for 15 years or more), have an established root system (usually 8-12 inches in depth) but during periods of drought, and poor soil conditions mean the roots are unable to obtain adequate amount of water and nutrients to maintain continued good health.  Trees of all ages suffer when extended drought conditions are experienced. Water stress happens very quickly for trees planted in difficult areas such as sidewalks, patios, or raised lawns where water naturally drains away.

Foundation damage may be avoided by ensuring that trees close to foundations are always well irrigated. This ensures that the tree doesn’t look for water on its own, roots will seek moisture wherever they can. Roots will not break pipes, but will seek out leakage from already damaged pipes. In addition many plants, and grass in a small area can effectively compete within the soil to use available water. This water competition can be severe. Remove excess plants, and or grass competition from around any tree to decrease water stress. Use mulch to conserve water and prevent weed competition.

Remember one of the most important things we can do to help our trees is to water them.
