Mulching

Do not allow mulch to pile up around the base of the tree- this can promote rot. Apply mulch in a doughnut shaped-ring around the base of the tree, no deeper than 6 inches, and out as far as you can go towards the edge of the drip line

Mulching out

Trees in the city are referred to as an urban forest. Although the trees are urban they make up a forest and require the same conditions you would find in a forest.

Mulches are materials placed over the soil surface to maintain moisture and improve soil conditions. Mulch can reduce water loss from the soil, minimize weed competition, and improve soil structure. Properly applied, mulch can give landscapes a well-groomed appearance. Mulch must be applied properly; if it is too deep or if the wrong material is used, it can actually cause significant harm to trees and other landscape plants.

Remember to mulch out! not up- keep the mulch away from the tree trunk as this promotes tree rot.
